Danjo Garan: The Heart of Shingon Buddhism Guide

Danjo Garan is one of the two most sacred sites on Koyasan, alongside Okunoin Cemetery. It is considered the original complex where Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, first established his monastic center. This sprawling temple complex is a treasure trove of Buddhist art and architecture, offering a deep dive into the history and philosophy of Shingon Buddhism. Kobo Daishi began construction of Danjo Garan in 816, envisioning it as the central hub for his new Buddhist sect. Over the centuries, the complex has been rebuilt and expanded, resulting in a diverse collection of buildings representing various architectural styles and periods. Key structures include the Kondo Hall (main hall), the Konpon Daito Pagoda (a massive two-storied pagoda), and the Miedo Hall (founder's hall). Each building houses important Buddhist statues and artwork. Visitors can explore the various halls and pagodas, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the beauty of the Buddhist art. The Konpon Daito Pagoda is particularly impressive, housing a three-dimensional mandala that represents the universe according to Shingon Buddhism. The complex also features beautiful gardens and walking paths, providing a serene environment for contemplation. Don't miss the Reihokan Museum, which houses a collection of Buddhist treasures from Koyasan's temples.
