Prepare for a climb, both literally and spiritually, at Kotohira-gū Shrine, affectionately known as Konpira-san. This iconic Shinto shrine, perched high on Mount Zōzu, is dedicated to sailors and seafaring. The journey to the main shrine involves ascending 785 stone steps, a challenge that rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Sanuki Plain and the Seto Inland Sea. Even if you're not particularly religious, the sheer scale of the complex, the vibrant atmosphere, and the sense of accomplishment after the climb make it a truly unforgettable experience. Konpira-san's history stretches back over a thousand years, evolving from a Buddhist temple to a Shinto shrine during the Meiji Restoration. It has long been a place of pilgrimage, particularly for those connected to the sea. Fishermen, sailors, and merchants would travel from afar to pray for safe voyages and prosperous trade. The shrine's popularity grew further during the Edo period, when travel restrictions eased, and it became a popular destination for commoners. Today, it continues to attract visitors from all walks of life, drawn by its spiritual significance and stunning natural beauty. Beyond the climb itself, there's plenty to see and do at Konpira-san. For a less strenuous experience, you can hire palanquin bearers to carry you part of the way. And don't forget to sample some of the local delicacies available at the shops and restaurants near the base of the mountain, such as *sanuki udon* (thick wheat noodles) and *kamameshi* (rice cooked in a pot).
Transportation
The closest train station is Kotohira Station, served by the JR Dosan Line and the Kotoden Kotohira Line. From Kotohira Station, it's about a 15-20 minute walk to the base of the steps leading up to Konpira-san. Kotoden Bus also operates routes to Kotohira. Take a bus bound for Kotohira Station or Konpira-san.
