Mount Takachiho, a prominent peak in the Kirishima mountain range, is steeped in Japanese mythology and offers breathtaking natural beauty. This active volcano is believed to be the site where Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, descended to Earth to rule Japan. The mountain's dramatic landscape, with its rugged slopes and volcanic craters, provides a stunning backdrop for hiking and exploration. The mountain's significance is deeply rooted in Shinto mythology. According to legend, Ninigi-no-Mikoto brought with him the three sacred treasures: the Yata no Kagami (mirror), the Ama no Murakumo no Tsurugi (sword), and the Yasakani no Magatama (jewel), which are now symbols of the Japanese Imperial family. The peak is considered a sacred place, and visitors often come to pay their respects and connect with the spiritual energy of the mountain. Visitors can enjoy hiking to the summit of Mount Takachiho, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. The trail is moderately challenging, but the reward is well worth the effort. You can also visit the Ama-no-Sakaho Shrine, located near the summit, which is dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto. The area is also known for its stunning azalea blooms in the spring. While not specifically known for a unique culinary tradition directly on the mountain, the surrounding Kirishima region offers local specialties like Kurobuta pork and Shochu.
Transportation
From Kirishima-Jingu Station, take a bus bound for Takachiho-gawara (高千穂河原). The bus ride takes approximately 30 minutes. From Takachiho-gawara, it's a hike to the summit of Mount Takachiho. Alternatively, you can drive to Takachiho-gawara and park there.
