Kouno-yu Guide
Kouno-yu: The Stork's Bath, a Legend of Healing Guide
Kouno-yu, also known as the Stork's Bath, is one of the seven famous public bathhouses in Kinosaki Onsen. It's located at the far end of the town, offering a tranquil escape from the main street. This bathhouse is steeped in legend and is said to be the oldest of the seven, making it a must-visit for those seeking a truly authentic onsen experience. The name "Kouno-yu" comes from the Japanese word for stork ("kounotori"), and the bath is associated with legends of healing and fertility. The legend of Kouno-yu tells the story of a stork that was found injured near the hot spring. After bathing in the waters, the stork miraculously recovered and flew away. This tale has led to Kouno-yu being associated with healing and good fortune, particularly for those seeking fertility or recovery from illness. The bathhouse itself is relatively simple in design, with both indoor and outdoor bathing areas. The outdoor rotenburo (open-air bath) is particularly appealing, offering a chance to relax amidst nature. At Kouno-yu, you can immerse yourself in the healing waters and soak in the tranquil atmosphere. The bathhouse features separate bathing areas for men and women, each with indoor and outdoor pools. Take your time to relax and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the mineral-rich water. After your bath, you can relax in the tatami mat resting area and enjoy a refreshing drink. Remember to bring your own towel or purchase one at the entrance. Kouno-yu is a perfect place to unwind and connect with the history and legends of Kinosaki Onsen.
