Kawayu Onsen: Dig Your Own Hot Spring in a Riverbed Guide

Experience the unique charm of Kawayu Onsen, a natural hot spring village where you can dig your own onsen (hot spring bath) directly in the Oto River. This is a truly unforgettable experience, allowing you to connect with nature and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the hot spring waters in a stunning riverside setting. Kawayu Onsen has been a popular destination for centuries, drawing visitors seeking relaxation and healing in its natural hot spring waters. The hot spring water bubbles up from the riverbed, creating a unique opportunity to create your own personalized onsen. The temperature of the water varies depending on the location and the time of year, allowing you to find the perfect spot to soak and unwind. The main activity at Kawayu Onsen is, of course, digging your own onsen! You can rent a shovel from local shops and find a spot along the riverbank to create your own private bath. The water is naturally heated, and the river provides a refreshing contrast. In winter, a giant communal bath called "Sennin-buro" is created in the river, offering a unique and festive onsen experience. Several ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) are located along the river, offering accommodation and onsen facilities.
