This well-preserved district features narrow, winding streets lined with earthen walls and meticulously maintained samurai residences. Walking through Nagamachi is like stepping back in time, allowing you to imagine what life was like for the warriors and their families who once called this place home. During the Edo period (1603-1868), Nagamachi was home to middle-ranking samurai serving the powerful Maeda clan, who ruled the Kaga Domain (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture). The district's layout and architecture were designed to provide security and privacy for the samurai families. The earthen walls surrounding the residences served as both protection and status symbols. Today, several of the former samurai residences are open to the public, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of these warriors. Visitors to Nagamachi can explore the Nomura Samurai House, a beautifully preserved residence that showcases the lifestyle of a high-ranking samurai family. Stroll along the narrow streets, admiring the earthen walls and traditional architecture. Visit the Shinise Kinenkan Museum, which displays artifacts related to the history of Kanazawa's traditional crafts and industries.
