Gyokusen-en Garden Guide
Gyokusen-en Garden: A Hidden Gem of Kanazawa Guide
Step into a world of tranquility at Gyokusen-en Garden, a meticulously crafted Japanese garden tucked away in the heart of Kanazawa. This serene oasis offers a respite from the bustling city, inviting you to wander through its carefully designed landscapes and appreciate the beauty of nature. It's a perfect example of a traditional Japanese strolling garden, designed to be enjoyed from multiple viewpoints along winding paths. Gyokusen-en Garden was originally created in the mid-17th century by the Maeda family, the powerful lords who ruled the Kaga Domain (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture, including Kanazawa). The garden was intended as a private retreat for the family and their guests. Over the centuries, it has been carefully maintained and preserved, showcasing the artistry and horticultural expertise of the Edo period. The garden's name, Gyokusen-en, translates to "Jade Spring Garden," a reference to the clear spring water that flows through the garden. Visitors to Gyokusen-en Garden can enjoy a variety of activities. Stroll along the winding paths, admiring the meticulously pruned trees, the serene ponds, and the carefully placed stones. The garden is particularly beautiful during the spring cherry blossom season and the autumn foliage season. Participate in a traditional tea ceremony at the garden's teahouse for an authentic cultural experience. Kanazawa is renowned for its seafood, especially crab and sushi. After visiting the garden, explore the nearby Omicho Market for a taste of local delicacies.
