Yunomine Onsen Guide
Yunomine Onsen: Japan's Oldest Hot Spring Guide
Yunomine Onsen, located in the mountains of Hongu, is one of Japan's oldest and most revered hot spring resorts. This small, secluded village is famous for its *Tsuboyu*, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed hot spring bath that is said to have healing properties. The atmosphere is tranquil and steeped in history, offering a unique and authentic onsen experience. The history of Yunomine Onsen dates back over 1,800 years. Legend has it that the hot spring was discovered by a pilgrim who was guided to it by a crow. For centuries, Yunomine Onsen has been a place of purification and healing for pilgrims traveling the Kumano Kodo routes. The waters of Tsuboyu are said to change color up to seven times a day, depending on the mineral content and the weather. Visitors can bathe in Tsuboyu (reservations are required and time is limited), explore the small village, and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) in Yunomine Onsen offer private onsen baths and delicious meals featuring local ingredients. A unique culinary tradition is *onsen tamago*, eggs cooked in the hot spring water, which have a distinctive flavor and texture.
