Aono Domon is a historic tunnel carved through a rocky mountain pass, a testament to one man's dedication to atonement. Moved by the suffering of travelers, Zenkai resolved to carve a tunnel through the mountain to create a safer passage. For over 30 years, he tirelessly worked with only a chisel and hammer, eventually completing the tunnel in 1764. He collected tolls to maintain the tunnel, making it one of the first toll roads in Japan. Today, visitors can walk through the Aono Domon tunnel and reflect on Zenkai's remarkable story. The tunnel itself is a marvel of engineering, considering the tools and techniques available at the time. The surrounding area offers hiking trails with breathtaking views of the valley. Transportation
From Hita Station, take the Oita Kotsu bus bound for Yabakei and get off at the 'Aono Domon' bus stop. The tunnel is located right next to the bus stop.
