Hirosaki Castle Guide

Hirosaki Castle: A Majestic Symbol of Samurai History and Cherry Blossom Spectacle Guide

Hirosaki Castle, a stunning landmark in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, is a must-see for any visitor to the region. More than just a castle, it's a living testament to Japan's feudal past, offering breathtaking views, especially during cherry blossom season. The castle grounds transform into a pink paradise in spring, attracting visitors from around the globe. Even outside of cherry blossom season, the castle's imposing structure and serene atmosphere make it a captivating destination. Originally built in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan, Hirosaki Castle has witnessed centuries of history. While the original five-story keep was destroyed by fire in 1627, it was rebuilt as a three-story structure in 1810. Remarkably, it's one of the few castles in Japan that wasn't dismantled during the Meiji Restoration. The castle's strategic location, surrounded by moats and fortified walls, reflects its importance as a defensive stronghold. Today, the castle keep, turrets, and gates stand as impressive reminders of the samurai era. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, climb the castle keep for panoramic views of Hirosaki and Mount Iwaki, and stroll through the beautiful gardens. During the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival (usually late April to early May), the park comes alive with food stalls, performances, and illuminated cherry trees. While the castle itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, Hirosaki is known for its apples. Be sure to try apple pie, apple cider, or other apple-based treats at local shops and cafes. You can also enjoy traditional Japanese sweets and tea within the castle grounds during certain events.
