Kokoen Garden is a stunning Japanese garden located adjacent to Himeji Castle. Comprising nine distinct walled gardens, each designed in a different style of the Edo period, Kokoen offers a diverse and captivating experience for visitors. From meticulously manicured landscapes to serene ponds and traditional teahouses, this garden is a haven of tranquility and beauty. Kokoen Garden was built in 1992 on the site of the former Lord's West Residence. The gardens were designed to recreate the atmosphere of the Edo period, showcasing various garden styles that were popular during that time. Each garden has its own unique theme and features, offering a glimpse into the diverse aesthetic sensibilities of the era. Explore the nine distinct gardens, each offering a unique experience. Stroll through the bamboo garden, admire the koi in the pond garden, and relax in the tea garden. Enjoy a traditional tea ceremony at the Soujuan teahouse (reservations recommended). The gardens offer stunning views of Himeji Castle, creating a picturesque backdrop for your visit. Kokoen is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom season and autumn foliage season.
Transportation
Kokoen Garden is located a short walk from Himeji Castle. From Himeji Station, you can take a bus to Himeji Castle Otemon-mae bus stop, which is close to both the castle and the garden. Alternatively, it's a pleasant 15-20 minute walk from Himeji Station.
