Trappistine Convent Guide

A Sanctuary of Serenity: Discover the Trappistine Convent Guide

The Trappistine Convent, officially known as the Our Lady of the Annunciation Priory, is a serene and beautiful Catholic convent located just outside Hakodate. Founded in 1898, it's one of the first convents established in Japan and offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. While visitors cannot enter the main convent building, the grounds and gardens are open to the public, providing a glimpse into the lives of the nuns who dedicate their lives to prayer and contemplation. The convent was established by French missionaries and has played a significant role in the development of Catholicism in Japan. The nuns follow the strict rules of the Trappistine order, which emphasizes silence, prayer, and manual labor. They support themselves by making and selling cookies, candies, and other confectionery items, which are popular souvenirs for visitors. Visitors can stroll through the beautifully maintained gardens, admire the statue of the Virgin Mary, and purchase the convent's famous cookies and candies at the gift shop. The peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings make it a perfect place for quiet reflection. Please remember to be respectful of the nuns' privacy and maintain a quiet demeanor while on the grounds.
