Hakodate Orthodox Church Guide
Hakodate Orthodox Church: A Beacon of Faith and History Guide
The Hakodate Orthodox Church, officially known as the Holy Resurrection Cathedral, is a beautiful and historically significant church located in the Motomachi district of Hakodate. Its distinctive Russian Orthodox architecture, characterized by its green copper roof and onion-shaped dome, makes it a prominent landmark in the city. The church stands as a testament to the early influence of Russian culture and religion in Hakodate. The original church was built in 1859 by the Russian Consulate, following the opening of Hakodate as a treaty port. It was destroyed by fire several times, including a major fire in 1907. The current structure was rebuilt in 1916, incorporating elements of Byzantine architecture. The church played a significant role in spreading Orthodox Christianity in Japan and continues to be an active place of worship. Its bells are famous for their unique sound, often referred to as the "Gankane Bell," which has been designated as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan." Visitors can admire the church's exterior architecture and, during designated hours, explore the interior. The interior features beautiful icons and religious artifacts. Listen for the sound of the "Gankane Bell," which is rung at specific times. The surrounding Motomachi district is also worth exploring, with its charming streets and historic buildings. Please be respectful of the church's religious significance when visiting.
