Hachimanzaka Slope: Hakodate's Iconic Hill with a View Guide
Hachimanzaka Slope is arguably the most famous and picturesque slope in Hakodate. This gently descending street leads directly to the harbor, offering breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding cityscape. The name "Hachimanzaka" comes from the Hachiman Shrine that once stood at the top of the slope. While the shrine is no longer there, the name has remained, and the slope has become a symbol of Hakodate. The area surrounding Hachimanzaka was historically a prosperous trading district, and many of the buildings along the slope reflect this history with their Western-influenced architecture. The slope has also been featured in numerous films and television shows, further cementing its iconic status. Walking down Hachimanzaka Slope is the main activity, allowing you to soak in the stunning views and appreciate the charming atmosphere. At the bottom of the slope, you'll find the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse district, a popular shopping and dining area. Transportation
From Hakodate Station, take the Hakodate City Tram (Route 2 or 5) to the 'Suehiro-cho' stop. From there, it's a short walk uphill to the top of Hachimanzaka Slope.
