The fort played a crucial role in the Boshin War, the last major conflict of the Tokugawa shogunate. The Battle of Hakodate, which took place at Goryokaku, marked the end of the shogunate's resistance and the beginning of the Meiji Restoration. Today, Goryokaku Fort is a designated Special Historic Site and a symbol of Hakodate's rich history. At Goryokaku Tower, visitors can ascend to the observation decks for stunning views of the star-shaped fort and the city of Hakodate. The tower also features exhibits about the history of Goryokaku and the Boshin War. The first floor has a souvenir shop and a restaurant. In spring, the fort is surrounded by cherry blossoms, creating a breathtaking spectacle. During winter, the fort is illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. The area around Goryokaku also offers local Hakodate cuisine, including fresh seafood and ramen.
Transportation
From Hakodate Station, take the Hakodate Tram (streetcar) to Goryokaku Koen-mae stop (approx. 15 minutes). From the tram stop, it's about a 10-minute walk to Goryokaku Tower.
