Blue Pond (Aoiike) Guide
Blue Pond: A Mystical Azure Oasis Guide
Discover the enchanting Blue Pond (Aoiike), a surreal and captivating natural wonder located near the hot spring town of Shirogane Onsen in Biei, Hokkaido. This artificial pond is renowned for its mesmerizing blue color, which varies in intensity depending on the weather and season. The pond's ethereal beauty, with its submerged trees and reflections of the surrounding forest, creates a truly unforgettable and otherworldly experience. It's a must-see destination for anyone visiting Hokkaido. The Blue Pond was not originally intended as a tourist attraction. It was created as part of an erosion control system after the eruption of Mount Tokachi in 1988. The aluminum hydroxide in the water reflects blue light, giving the pond its distinctive color. The dead trees standing in the water add to the pond's mysterious and haunting atmosphere. Visitors can walk along the paved path that surrounds the pond, taking in the breathtaking views from various vantage points. The pond is particularly stunning in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and the reflections are most vibrant. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the Blue Pond itself, the nearby Shirogane Onsen area offers a variety of restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy local Hokkaido cuisine.
