Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) Guide

Witness Nature's Fury: The Azure Waters of Umi Jigoku Guide

Prepare to be amazed by Umi Jigoku, one of Beppu's most famous "hells" (jigoku), a collection of geothermal hot springs for viewing rather than bathing. Umi Jigoku, meaning "Sea Hell," is renowned for its striking cobalt blue waters, a result of dissolved iron sulfate. While you can't bathe in this particular hell, the vibrant color and the surrounding steam create a truly otherworldly spectacle. The "hells" of Beppu have been known for centuries, and Umi Jigoku is one of the most visually impressive. The intense heat and mineral content of the water make it unsuitable for bathing, but the unique geological formations and vibrant colors have made them popular tourist attractions. The name "hells" reflects the local perception of these geothermal areas as being akin to the underworld. At Umi Jigoku, you can marvel at the vibrant blue waters, explore the surrounding gardens, and learn about the geothermal activity that creates this natural wonder. There's also a small museum showcasing the history and geology of the hells. You can also enjoy the on-site foot bath, which uses slightly cooler water from a nearby spring. Don't miss the opportunity to try "Jigoku Mushi Pudding," a steamed pudding cooked using the geothermal heat, a local specialty.
