Takegawara Onsen Guide
Takegawara Onsen: Step Back in Time for a Sand Bath Experience! Guide
Immerse yourself in history and relaxation at Takegawara Onsen, Beppu's iconic and oldest public bathhouse. More than just a place to soak, Takegawara Onsen offers a unique sand bath experience, where you're buried in naturally heated sand, allowing the geothermal warmth to soothe your muscles and melt away stress. It's a truly unforgettable way to experience Beppu's onsen culture. Takegawara Onsen boasts a rich history dating back to 1879. Originally built with bamboo, hence the name "Takegawara" (bamboo tile), it was rebuilt in its current distinctive architectural style in 1938. The building itself is a testament to traditional Japanese design, with its ornate roof and classic wooden structure. It has served as a beloved gathering place for locals and a must-visit destination for tourists for generations. The main draw is undoubtedly the sand bath. After changing into a provided yukata (light cotton kimono), you'll lie down in a shallow pit where attendants will shovel warm, volcanic sand over your body. The heat is intense but therapeutic, and after about 15 minutes, you'll emerge feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. In addition to the sand bath, Takegawara Onsen also offers traditional hot spring baths. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition within the onsen itself, Beppu is known for its Toriten (tempura chicken), a local specialty you can find at restaurants nearby.
Transportation
Takegawara Onsen is located in the heart of Beppu, about a 15-minute walk from Beppu Station. You can also take a local bus to the 'Takegawara' bus stop, which is right in front of the onsen.
