Shiraike Jigoku (White Pond Hell) Guide
Shiraike Jigoku: Serene Beauty Amidst Volcanic Fury Guide
Prepare to be mesmerized by Shiraike Jigoku, or "White Pond Hell," one of Beppu's famed "Hells" (Jigoku Meguri). Unlike the fiery reds and blues of its counterparts, Shiraike Jigoku presents a tranquil, almost ethereal scene. The pond's milky white waters, a result of dissolved calcium carbonate, create a stark contrast against the lush green gardens surrounding it. It's a place where the raw power of geothermal activity meets serene beauty, offering a unique and captivating experience. While the "Hells" aren't places for bathing (temperatures are far too high!), they offer a fascinating glimpse into Beppu's volcanic landscape. Shiraike Jigoku is particularly known for its on-site aquarium, a somewhat unexpected but delightful addition. Here, you can observe various tropical fish thriving in water heated by the geothermal activity. The contrast between the hellish pond outside and the vibrant marine life inside is truly remarkable. Beyond the pond and aquarium, Shiraike Jigoku offers a relaxing atmosphere. Stroll through the meticulously maintained Japanese gardens, admire the traditional architecture, and sample local delicacies. Don't miss the opportunity to try "Jigoku steamed pudding," a local specialty cooked using the natural steam from the hot springs. It's a sweet and satisfying treat that perfectly complements the unique experience of visiting Shiraike Jigoku.
