Beppu Jigoku (Hell) Guide

Journey to the Underworld: Explore Beppu's Fiery Hells Guide

Prepare to witness the raw power of nature at Beppu Jigoku, or the "Hells of Beppu." These eight spectacular geothermal hot springs are not for bathing, but rather for observing the earth's volcanic activity in all its glory. Each "hell" boasts unique characteristics, from boiling mud pools and vibrant, colored ponds to spouting geysers, offering a mesmerizing and slightly eerie experience. It's a fantastic way to understand the volcanic forces that shape this region of Japan. While these "hells" are natural wonders, their presentation to tourists has evolved over time. In the Edo period, the intense heat and steam made these areas uninhabitable, leading locals to associate them with the Buddhist concept of hell. Over the years, they were developed into tourist attractions, with each hell given a distinctive name and features to enhance the visitor experience. Some even incorporate small gardens and animal exhibits, adding to the overall appeal. A visit to Beppu Jigoku offers more than just visual spectacle. You can sample "hell-steamed" foods, cooked using the geothermal heat, such as eggs and corn. Many of the hells also have foot baths where you can soak your feet in the mineral-rich waters. Don't miss the opportunity to learn about the geology and history of the area through informative displays and demonstrations. It's a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
