Volcanic Majesty: Witness the Power of Nature at Owakudani Guide

Owakudani, also known as "Great Boiling Valley," is a volcanic valley created approximately 3,000 years ago by the eruption of Mount Hakone. This active volcanic zone is a popular tourist destination, offering breathtaking views of steaming vents, bubbling hot springs, and sulfurous fumes. The stark, otherworldly landscape provides a dramatic contrast to the lush greenery of the surrounding Hakone region. Owakudani's volcanic activity has shaped its landscape and history. The area was once known as "Jigokudani" (Hell Valley) due to its harsh environment and strong sulfurous smell. However, it was renamed Owakudani during the Meiji period. The volcanic activity continues to this day, with ongoing steam vents and hot springs. The area is carefully monitored for safety, and visitors can experience the raw power of nature in a controlled environment. Visitors to Owakudani can witness the impressive volcanic activity firsthand. Take a ropeway ride up to the valley for panoramic views of Mount Fuji (on a clear day) and the surrounding landscape. Sample the famous "kuro-tamago" (black eggs), hard-boiled eggs cooked in the hot springs, which are said to add seven years to your life. Explore the walking trails around the valley, taking in the sights and smells of the volcanic landscape. Be aware that the air can be quite sulfurous, so those with respiratory problems may want to take precautions.
