Burano: A Kaleidoscope of Color in the Venetian Lagoon Guide

Escape the crowds of Venice and discover the enchanting island of Burano, a true feast for the eyes. Famous for its brightly colored houses, Burano is a photographer's dream and a delightful place to wander and get lost in its narrow streets. More than just a pretty face, Burano has a rich history and a unique culture that sets it apart from the rest of Venice. Burano's history is intertwined with fishing and lacemaking. Legend has it that the fishermen painted their houses in vibrant colors so they could recognize them from afar when returning from sea in the fog. Lacemaking became a prominent industry on the island in the 16th century, and Burano lace is still highly prized today. You can visit the Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum) to learn more about this intricate craft. A visit to Burano is all about soaking up the atmosphere. Stroll along the canals, admire the colorful houses, and browse the shops selling Burano lace and other local crafts. Be sure to visit the leaning bell tower of San Martino church, a quirky landmark that adds to the island's charm. Burano is also known for its BussolĂ  and Esse biscuits, traditional butter cookies that are perfect for a sweet treat. Many restaurants on the island specialize in fresh seafood, offering a delicious taste of the lagoon.
