Dating back to the 15th century, Porta Catania, also known as Porta del Tocco, has played a significant role in Taormina's defense and development. The gate's name derives from Catania, the nearest major city to the south. The gate is adorned with the coat of arms of Taormina, featuring the centaur Tauro, a symbol deeply rooted in the town's mythology. Imagine the bustling activity that once surrounded this gate, with merchants, travelers, and locals passing through its archway, contributing to the vibrant tapestry of Taormina's past. Today, Porta Catania serves as a starting point for exploring the southern part of Taormina. From here, you can wander through the charming streets, discover hidden courtyards, and soak in the breathtaking views of the coastline. Be sure to visit the Palazzo Corvaja, a stunning medieval palace located just a short walk from the gate. As you explore, indulge in the local culinary delights.
