Torre del Mangia Guide

Climb to the Heavens: Siena's Towering Masterpiece Guide

The Torre del Mangia, a slender and elegant tower, dominates the Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy. This iconic landmark offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Tuscan countryside. A visit to Siena is incomplete without ascending this historic tower, experiencing the unique perspective it provides, and immersing yourself in the heart of Sienese history and culture. Prepare for a climb that rewards you with unforgettable vistas. The tower's history is deeply intertwined with the history of Siena itself. Construction began in 1325 and was completed in 1348, just before the devastating Black Death swept through Europe. The tower was named after its first bell-ringer, Giovanni di Balduccio, nicknamed "Mangiaguadagni" (money-eater) for his alleged extravagance. The height of the tower, 87 meters (285 feet) including the lightning rod, was deliberately chosen to be the same height as the Duomo, symbolizing the balance of power between the church and the state. Visitors can climb the 400 steps to the top of the Torre del Mangia for a truly rewarding experience. The climb is moderately challenging, but the stunning 360-degree views from the top are well worth the effort. From this vantage point, you can admire the Piazza del Campo, the Duomo, the rolling hills of Tuscany, and the intricate network of streets that make up Siena's historic center. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for some narrow passages. There are no elevators.
