Piazza del Campo Guide
Siena's Heartbeat: Immerse Yourself in the Splendor of Piazza del Campo Guide
Piazza del Campo is the main public space of the historic center of Siena, Tuscany, Italy. It is renowned worldwide for its unique shell shape, its medieval architecture, and for being the site of the Palio, a thrilling horse race that takes place twice each year. Visiting Piazza del Campo is like stepping back in time, offering a captivating glimpse into the rich history and vibrant culture of Siena. The Piazza del Campo has been the heart of Sienese life since the 13th century. It was originally a marketplace and meeting place, and its distinctive shape was determined by the natural slope of the land. The piazza is paved with red brick laid in a herringbone pattern, divided into nine sections that radiate from the Palazzo Pubblico, the city hall. These nine sections represent the government of the Nine, who ruled Siena during its golden age. Visitors to Piazza del Campo can admire the Palazzo Pubblico and its towering Torre del Mangia, climb the Torre del Mangia for breathtaking views of Siena and the surrounding countryside, and relax at one of the many cafes and restaurants that line the piazza. During the Palio, the piazza transforms into a race track, with thousands of spectators cheering on their favorite contrade (city wards). Siena is also known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine. Be sure to try pici pasta, ribollita soup, and cantucci biscuits dipped in Vin Santo wine.
