Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) Guide

Hike Among the Gods: Breathtaking Views on the Amalfi Coast Guide

Prepare to be swept away by the Sentiero degli Dei, or Path of the Gods, a legendary hiking trail clinging to the cliffs high above the Amalfi Coast. This isn't just a walk; it's an immersive experience that will leave you breathless with its panoramic vistas of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the island of Capri, and the dramatic coastline stretching as far as the eye can see. The name itself hints at the divine beauty that awaits, and trust us, it lives up to the hype. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual walker, the Path of the Gods offers an unforgettable journey through some of Italy's most stunning landscapes. The Path of the Gods has been used for centuries, originally as a mule track connecting remote villages along the coast. Before the coastal road was built, this path was a vital artery for trade and communication. Today, it's a protected area, preserving the natural beauty and historical significance of the region. As you hike, you'll pass through ancient terraces, vineyards, and olive groves, offering glimpses into the traditional way of life that still thrives in this corner of Italy. Keep an eye out for the ruins of old farmhouses and chapels, whispering tales of the past. The most popular activity is, of course, hiking! There are two main starting points: Bomerano (in Agerola) and Praiano. Bomerano offers a slightly easier, mostly downhill hike towards Positano, while Praiano involves a steeper ascent at the beginning. Regardless of your chosen route, be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water, and pack a picnic to enjoy amidst the stunning scenery. Many local companies offer guided tours, providing insights into the history, flora, and fauna of the area. Don't forget your camera – you'll want to capture every moment of this incredible experience. While not directly culinary, many local restaurants in Bomerano and Nocelle (near the end of the trail) offer traditional Campanian cuisine, featuring fresh seafood, homemade pasta, and locally grown produce.

Transportation

To reach the Path of the Gods, you'll first need to get to the Amalfi Coast. From Naples, you can take a train to Sorrento and then a SITA bus to either Agerola (for Bomerano) or Praiano. From Positano, you can take a SITA bus to Praiano. The SITA bus is the most common and affordable way to navigate the coast. Be sure to check the bus schedules in advance, as they can be infrequent, especially during the off-season. Alternatively, you can hire a private taxi or arrange for a transfer, but this will be significantly more expensive.
