Lama Monachile, also known as Cala Porto, is arguably the most iconic and photographed beach in Polignano a Mare. The name "Lama Monachile" refers to the ancient bridge that once spanned the cove, connecting the two sides of the town. The bridge was part of the Via Traiana, a Roman road that connected Benevento to Brindisi. While the original bridge is no longer standing, its remnants can still be seen, adding to the historical significance of the site. The cove itself has served as a natural harbor and a place of refuge for centuries. The main activity at Lama Monachile is, of course, swimming! Transportation
Lama Monachile is located right in the heart of Polignano a Mare and is easily accessible on foot from the Centro Storico and other parts of town. If you're arriving by train, it's a short walk from the Polignano a Mare train station. Local buses also stop nearby. Parking can be challenging, especially during peak season, so it's best to park outside the immediate area and walk in.
