Cala Paura/Porto Cavallo Guide
Cala Paura/Porto Cavallo: Dive into the Heart of Polignano a Mare Guide
Cala Paura, also known as Porto Cavallo, is a charming and unique beach nestled in the heart of Polignano a Mare. Unlike typical sandy beaches, Cala Paura features smooth, rounded pebbles and crystal-clear turquoise waters, making it a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. This picturesque cove offers a refreshing escape from the summer heat and a chance to experience the authentic beauty of the Apulian coastline. Cala Paura's history is intertwined with the fishing traditions of Polignano a Mare. For generations, local fishermen have used this cove as a safe harbor for their boats, contributing to its authentic and unpretentious atmosphere. The name "Cala Paura" (Bay of Fear) is rumored to originate from the sometimes-rough seas that can enter the cove, but don't let that deter you – on most days, the water is calm and inviting. The presence of the old harbor adds a touch of rustic charm to the already stunning scenery. The main activity at Cala Paura is, of course, swimming and sunbathing. The clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, allowing you to explore the underwater world and discover the local marine life. You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas for a comfortable day at the beach, or simply spread out your towel on the smooth pebbles. Several small restaurants and bars are located nearby, offering delicious seafood and refreshing drinks. Be sure to try the local panino con il polpo (octopus sandwich), a popular street food that perfectly captures the flavors of the sea.
