San Biagio Church Guide
A Renaissance Masterpiece: Discover the Serenity of San Biagio Guide
The Tempio di San Biagio, or San Biagio Church, is a stunning example of Renaissance architecture located just outside the walls of Montepulciano. This iconic church, with its travertine facade and harmonious proportions, is a must-see for art and architecture enthusiasts. Its serene setting and breathtaking beauty offer a peaceful escape from the bustling town center. Construction of San Biagio began in 1518, commissioned by Pope Leo X and designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. Sangallo, a prominent architect of the High Renaissance, envisioned a Greek cross plan with a central dome, drawing inspiration from Bramante's design for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Sadly, Sangallo died before the church was completed, and the project was finished by other architects, staying true to his original vision. The church is dedicated to Saint Blaise, the patron saint of throat ailments. Visitors to San Biagio can admire the church's elegant exterior, characterized by its symmetrical facade and imposing dome. Inside, the church is equally impressive, with its soaring ceilings, marble altars, and delicate frescoes. Take a moment to appreciate the harmonious proportions and the sense of tranquility that permeates the space. The surrounding grounds offer beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll and contemplation. While not directly related to the church, the area around San Biagio offers opportunities to sample local culinary delights. Many restaurants and cafes in Montepulciano feature traditional Tuscan cuisine, using fresh, local ingredients.
