This artificial lake is famous for the 14th-century church tower that eerily rises from its depths, a haunting reminder of the village of Graun, which was flooded in 1950 to create a hydroelectric reservoir. The story of Lake Resia is one of progress and sacrifice. In the mid-20th century, the decision was made to dam the Adige River to generate electricity. Despite protests from the local community, the village of Graun and part of Resia were flooded, displacing hundreds of residents. Only the church tower of Graun was left standing, a silent testament to the village that once thrived beneath the water's surface. The tower has become an iconic symbol of the region, representing both loss and resilience. Today, Lake Resia offers a variety of activities for visitors. In summer, the lake is a popular spot for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and sailing. Hiking and biking trails surround the lake, providing stunning views of the submerged church tower and the surrounding mountains. In winter, when the lake freezes over, you can even walk or ice skate to the tower! The area also boasts several restaurants and cafes serving traditional South Tyrolean cuisine. Transportation
From Glorenza, Italy, Lake Resia is easily accessible by bus. Take bus line 273 towards Reschenpass. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. The bus stops near the lake, allowing for easy access to the various viewpoints and activities.
