Santa Margherita Sanctuary Guide
A Spiritual Ascent: Discover the Sanctuary of Santa Margherita in Cortona Guide
Perched high above the Etruscan town of Cortona, the Sanctuary of Santa Margherita is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and a place of profound spiritual significance. Dedicated to Saint Margaret of Cortona, a Franciscan tertiary who lived and died in the town, the sanctuary offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Valdichiana valley and Lake Trasimeno. It's a place where art, history, and faith converge, creating a truly memorable experience for visitors. The original church on this site was built shortly after Saint Margaret's death in 1297. However, the current sanctuary dates back to the mid-19th century, designed by Enrico Presenti in the Neo-Gothic style. The sanctuary houses the incorrupt body of Saint Margaret, which is displayed in a glass coffin. Saint Margaret is revered for her life of penance and charity, and the sanctuary attracts pilgrims and visitors from all over the world. Visitors to the Sanctuary of Santa Margherita can explore the beautiful interior of the church, admire the stained-glass windows and intricate details of the architecture, and pay their respects to Saint Margaret. The climb to the sanctuary is steep but rewarding, offering stunning views along the way. You can also visit the nearby Museo Diocesano, which houses a collection of religious art and artifacts. While in Cortona, be sure to sample the local cuisine, including *chianina* beef, a prized breed of cattle raised in the region, and *vinsanto*, a sweet dessert wine.
