Corniglia: Cinque Terre's Hidden Gem Guide

Corniglia, nestled in the heart of Cinque Terre, is the only village that doesn't directly face the sea. Perched high on a cliff, it offers a unique and tranquil experience compared to its neighboring villages. Known for its vineyards and stunning views, Corniglia is a perfect escape for those seeking a more authentic and less crowded Cinque Terre experience. Unlike the other four villages, Corniglia's history is less tied to maritime activities. Its economy has traditionally revolved around agriculture, particularly grape cultivation for the production of Sciacchetrà, a sweet dessert wine. The village dates back to Roman times, and its name is believed to derive from the Roman family Cornelia. Its strategic location on the hilltop provided natural defenses throughout its history. A visit to Corniglia involves a bit of a climb, either up the 365 steps of the Lardarina staircase from the train station or via a shuttle bus. Once in the village, you can explore its narrow, winding streets, visit the Church of San Pietro, and enjoy breathtaking views from the Santa Maria Terrace. Wine tasting is a must, allowing you to sample the local Sciacchetrà and other regional wines. For a culinary experience, try the local pesto, seafood dishes, and focaccia. Corniglia offers a more relaxed pace, perfect for hiking, enjoying the scenery, and savoring the local flavors.
