Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) Guide
Bathed in Azure Light: Enter the Magical Blue Grotto Guide
Prepare to be mesmerized by the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), one of Capri's most iconic and enchanting attractions. This sea cave, famous for its ethereal blue light, is a natural wonder that has captivated visitors for centuries. Sunlight enters the cave through an underwater opening, creating a breathtaking spectacle of shimmering azure hues. The experience of floating in the darkness, surrounded by this otherworldly glow, is truly unforgettable. The Blue Grotto was known to the Romans, who used it as a private swimming pool and decorated it with statues. However, it was largely forgotten until the 19th century when it was rediscovered by a German writer and painter. Since then, it has become a must-see destination for travelers from around the world. The unique lighting effect is caused by the way sunlight filters through the water and reflects off the white sandy bottom of the cave. The only way to enter the Blue Grotto is by small rowboat. You'll lie back in the boat as your oarsman expertly navigates through the narrow entrance. Once inside, you'll have a few minutes to marvel at the blue light and listen to the oarsman's singing. Swimming in the grotto is officially prohibited, but some visitors have been known to take a quick dip when the coast is clear. There isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with the Blue Grotto itself, but you can find restaurants serving fresh seafood and Caprese specialties in nearby Anacapri.
Transportation
There are several ways to reach the Blue Grotto. From Marina Grande, you can take a boat directly to the grotto entrance. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Anacapri to the Grotta Azzurra stop, then walk down a series of steps to the sea. From there, you'll need to take a rowboat to enter the grotto. The bus from Anacapri is the number 'AD'.
