Abbazia di Novacella: A Spiritual Oasis and Wine Lover's Paradise Guide

Nestled amidst rolling vineyards just outside Bressanone, the Abbazia di Novacella (Neustift Abbey) is a breathtaking blend of spirituality, history, and viticulture. More than just a monastery, it's a living, breathing testament to centuries of faith, learning, and winemaking. Prepare to be captivated by its stunning Baroque architecture, tranquil gardens, and the legacy of the Augustinian Canons who have called this place home since the 12th century. Whether you're seeking a moment of quiet reflection, a glimpse into the past, or a taste of exceptional Alto Adige wine, Abbazia di Novacella offers an unforgettable experience. Founded in 1142, the abbey served as a hospice for pilgrims traveling to Rome and a center for education and culture. Over the centuries, it has weathered wars, fires, and political upheavals, each time emerging stronger and more resilient. The current Baroque appearance is largely thanks to a major renovation in the 18th century, which transformed the abbey into the architectural masterpiece we see today. Don't miss the stunning abbey church, the library with its impressive collection of manuscripts, and the Angel's Well, a symbol of the abbey's hospitality. Visitors can explore the abbey grounds, including the church, cloister, library (guided tours only), and the picturesque gardens. A highlight for many is the abbey's winery, one of the oldest and most respected in the region. Take a tour of the vineyards and cellars, and indulge in a tasting of their renowned white wines, particularly their Sylvaner and Kerner. The abbey also has a restaurant and shop where you can purchase local products, including wine, honey, and other delicacies. The cuisine in the restaurant features traditional South Tyrolean dishes, often incorporating ingredients grown on the abbey grounds.
