Piazza Mercantile: The Heartbeat of Bari's History Guide
Piazza Mercantile, the historical heart of Bari, is a vibrant square that has served as the city's commercial and social hub for centuries. Surrounded by elegant buildings, bustling cafes, and historical landmarks, this lively piazza offers a captivating glimpse into Bari's past and present. It's the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy a coffee, and watch the world go by. Piazza Mercantile's history dates back to the Middle Ages, when it served as the city's main marketplace and center of trade. The square was the site of important events, including public gatherings, festivals, and even executions. The Colonna della Giustizia (Column of Justice), topped with a stone lion, stands as a reminder of the square's role in dispensing justice. Over the centuries, Piazza Mercantile has undergone several transformations, but it has always remained a central gathering place for the people of Bari. Take a stroll around the square and admire the architecture of the Palazzo del Sedile, the former seat of the city's government. Visit the Colonna della Giustizia and learn about its history. Relax at one of the many cafes and enjoy a coffee or aperitivo. Browse the shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. In the evenings, the piazza comes alive with music and entertainment. Piazza Mercantile is surrounded by restaurants offering a variety of Apulian specialties. Look for dishes like orecchiette pasta, fresh seafood, and focaccia barese. Many restaurants offer outdoor seating, allowing you to enjoy your meal while soaking up the lively atmosphere of the square.
