Originally built in the Norman era (around the 12th century), it served as a crucial watchtower, guarding the coastline against pirate raids and Saracen invasions. Over the centuries, it underwent several modifications and reconstructions, reflecting the changing needs of defense and the evolving architectural styles. Its strategic location allowed for early detection of approaching threats, enabling the town to prepare and defend itself. Today, the tower stands as a testament to the resilience and strategic importance of Agropoli throughout history. Visiting the Torre di San Marco offers a variety of activities. The most popular is climbing to the top for panoramic views of the coastline, the harbor, and the surrounding Cilentan landscape. The views are especially spectacular at sunset. The area around the tower is perfect for leisurely walks, offering stunning photo opportunities.
