Deserted Village at Slievemore Guide

Step Back in Time: Explore the Haunting Beauty of Slievemore's Deserted Village Guide

Imagine wandering through the skeletal remains of a village, frozen in time against the dramatic backdrop of a rugged mountain. That's exactly what awaits you at the Deserted Village at Slievemore, a poignant and evocative site on Achill Island. This isn't just a collection of ruins; it's a tangible connection to a past way of life, a silent testament to the hardships and resilience of the people who once called this place home. Prepare to be moved by the stark beauty and the palpable sense of history that permeates this unique location. The Deserted Village consists of around 80 to 100 stone cottages, or "booley houses," stretching along the southern slope of Slievemore mountain. While the exact origins are debated, it's believed the village was inhabited from at least the 12th century, with its population peaking in the 19th century. The primary reason for its abandonment is attributed to the Great Famine of the 1840s, which decimated the Irish population and forced many to emigrate in search of a better life. Other factors, such as landlord evictions and changing agricultural practices, also contributed to the village's decline. Today, the roofless stone structures stand as a stark reminder of this difficult period in Irish history. A visit to the Deserted Village is a self-guided experience, allowing you to wander at your own pace and soak in the atmosphere. Take your time to explore the individual cottages, imagining the lives of the families who once lived within these walls. The walk along the path is relatively easy, but sturdy footwear is recommended. The surrounding landscape offers stunning views of Blacksod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, making it a photographer's paradise. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly linked to the village itself, be sure to sample the fresh seafood and traditional Irish fare at the nearby restaurants in Dugort after your visit.
