Pura Penataran Sasih: Home of the Moon of Pejeng Guide

Pura Penataran Sasih, located near Pejeng in Gianyar (but often visited from Klungkung due to its proximity), is one of Bali's most important and ancient temples. It's renowned for housing the "Moon of Pejeng," a massive bronze kettle drum believed to be the largest single-cast bronze drum in the world. This temple offers a fascinating blend of history, mythology, and religious significance. The history of Pura Penataran Sasih is deeply rooted in Balinese legends and the island's pre-Hindu past. The Moon of Pejeng itself is shrouded in mystery, with various myths explaining its origin. One legend claims it fell from the sky and illuminated the entire island. The temple's name, "Penataran Sasih," translates to "Temple of the Moon," further emphasizing the drum's central role in the temple's identity. The temple complex has been expanded and renovated over centuries, reflecting the changing religious and political landscape of Bali. Visitors to Pura Penataran Sasih can admire the impressive architecture of the temple complex, including its towering meru (multi-tiered shrines) and intricate carvings. The highlight, of course, is the Moon of Pejeng, housed in a special pavilion. While touching the drum is not permitted, you can observe its impressive size and intricate details. Remember to dress respectfully when visiting the temple (shoulders and knees covered). The temple is an active place of worship, so be mindful of local customs and traditions.
