Kerta Gosa: Witnessing Justice and Art in a Royal Court Guide
Kerta Gosa, also known as the Hall of Justice, is a historical landmark located in Klungkung, Bali. This beautifully decorated pavilion was once part of the Klungkung Palace (Puri Semarapura) and served as the high court of the Klungkung kingdom. It's a fascinating glimpse into the traditional legal system and artistic heritage of Bali. Kerta Gosa was built in the early 18th century, during the reign of Dewa Agung Jambe. It was the place where important legal cases were judged, and decisions were made based on traditional Balinese law (adat). The pavilion's most striking feature is its ceiling, adorned with intricate paintings depicting scenes from the Sutasoma Kakawin epic and the consequences of good and bad deeds. These paintings served as a visual aid to guide the judges in their deliberations and to remind those present of the importance of justice. Visitors to Kerta Gosa can admire the stunning architecture and the detailed ceiling paintings. The site also includes a floating pavilion (Bale Kambang) in a nearby pond, adding to the serene atmosphere. Transportation
Kerta Gosa is located in the heart of Klungkung town, making it easily accessible. From Denpasar, take the main road east towards Klungkung. The site is well-signposted and can be reached by car, scooter, or public bus. Public buses are available from Denpasar's Batubulan terminal to Klungkung. Once in Klungkung, Kerta Gosa is within walking distance of the bus terminal.
