Kawah Putih: A Surreal Volcanic Crater Lake Guide

Discover the ethereal beauty of Kawah Putih, a stunning crater lake located in the highlands of Ciwidey, south of Bandung. The name "Kawah Putih" translates to "White Crater" in Indonesian, a fitting description for its milky white, almost surreal appearance. This volcanic lake is a popular destination for both local and international tourists seeking a unique and unforgettable natural experience. Kawah Putih was formed by the eruption of Mount Patuha. The high sulfur content in the water gives it its distinctive white color and also contributes to the strong sulfuric odor. The lake's color can change depending on the concentration of sulfur and the weather conditions, ranging from bluish-white to greenish-white. The surrounding landscape is equally captivating, with barren, white-colored soil and sparse vegetation creating a stark and otherworldly atmosphere. Visitors can walk along the edge of the crater lake and take in the breathtaking views. Photography enthusiasts will find endless opportunities to capture the unique beauty of Kawah Putih. Remember to bring a mask to protect yourself from the strong sulfur fumes, especially if you are sensitive to strong odors. There are also several photo spots and platforms built around the lake for better viewing angles. Local vendors sell snacks and drinks near the entrance.
