Pura Lempuyang Luhur Guide
Pura Lempuyang Luhur: Journey to the 'Gateway to Heaven' Guide
Embark on a spiritual and scenic adventure to Pura Lempuyang Luhur, one of Bali's most sacred and iconic temples. Perched high on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang, this temple complex offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including Mount Agung. The most famous feature of Pura Lempuyang is the "Gateway to Heaven," a split gate that frames Mount Agung in the distance, creating a truly unforgettable photo opportunity. Pura Lempuyang Luhur is one of the six holiest places of worship in Bali, known as Sad Kahyangan Jagad. Its history dates back to the 11th century, making it one of the oldest temples on the island. The temple is dedicated to Ida Hyang Gni Jaya, the god of fire. The climb to the main temple is a challenging one, involving thousands of steps, but the spiritual reward and stunning views make it well worth the effort. The main activity at Pura Lempuyang Luhur is, of course, visiting the temple and taking in the incredible views. Be prepared for a strenuous climb, and remember to dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered). You can rent a sarong and sash at the base of the temple. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the temple itself, you can find local warungs (small restaurants) near the base offering traditional Balinese dishes and refreshments.
Transportation
Reaching Pura Lempuyang Luhur requires some planning. The most common way is to hire a private driver or join a tour. From Amlapura, it's about a 30-minute drive. From other parts of Bali, the journey can take several hours. Be aware that the road leading to the temple is narrow and winding. Parking is available at the base of the mountain, from where you'll begin the climb. Some drivers may offer to take you part of the way up on a motorbike for a fee.
