Seek Blessings at the Golden Temple: Kashi Vishwanath Temple Guide
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, also known as the Golden Temple, is one of the most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in the heart of Varanasi, it draws millions of pilgrims and tourists each year seeking blessings and spiritual solace. The temple's golden spire and the powerful presence of the Shiva Lingam within make it a truly awe-inspiring and deeply spiritual experience. The original Kashi Vishwanath Temple was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times throughout history. The current structure was built by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780. The temple's golden spire was added later by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab. The temple holds immense religious significance for Hindus, as it is believed that a visit to Kashi Vishwanath and a dip in the holy Ganges can liberate one from the cycle of birth and death. Visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple involves joining the queue to offer prayers to the Shiva Lingam. Be prepared for crowds, especially during festivals and auspicious days. Photography is generally restricted inside the temple complex. You can also explore the surrounding narrow lanes (galis) filled with shops selling religious items, souvenirs, and local snacks. While the temple itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the surrounding area offers a variety of Varanasi street food, including *thandai* (a milk-based drink) and sweets.
Transportation
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is located in the narrow lanes of Varanasi, making it accessible primarily by foot or cycle-rickshaw. Auto-rickshaws and taxis can drop you off at Godowlia Chowk, from where you'll need to walk for about 10-15 minutes through the bustling lanes to reach the temple entrance. Due to the heavy traffic and narrow roads, it's advisable to avoid driving directly to the temple. Bus route 24 goes to Godowlia, which is a short walk from the Temple.
