Mangala Devi Temple Guide
A Sanctuary in the Clouds: Discover the Ancient Mangala Devi Temple Guide
Venture into the heart of the Periyar Tiger Reserve and discover the ancient Mangala Devi Temple, a hidden gem perched atop a hill at an altitude of approximately 1,337 meters. This historic temple, shrouded in mist and surrounded by lush greenery, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage. The Mangala Devi Temple is believed to be over 1000 years old, with its origins dating back to the Pandyan dynasty. Legend has it that Kannagi, the heroine of the Tamil epic Silappatikaram, attained salvation here. The temple is dedicated to Mangala Devi, an incarnation of the goddess Parvati. The architecture reflects traditional Kerala and Tamil styles, with intricate carvings and a serene atmosphere. The temple is only open to visitors during the Chitra Pournami festival, which usually falls in April-May. During this time, devotees flock to the temple to offer prayers and participate in the festivities. Even if you can't visit during the festival, the trek to the temple (with permission from the forest department) is an adventure in itself, offering stunning views and a chance to experience the natural beauty of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Remember to obtain necessary permits and follow the guidelines provided by the forest department. The area around the temple doesn't have specific culinary traditions, but you can find local Kerala cuisine in nearby towns.
Transportation
Access to the Mangala Devi Temple is restricted and requires permission from the Forest Department. You'll need to obtain a pass from either the Forest Department in Thekkady or the Wildlife Warden's office in Idukki. Jeeps are typically the mode of transport to reach the temple due to the rough terrain. These jeeps can be hired from Kumily or Thekkady. It's advisable to book in advance, especially during peak season.
