Embark on a fascinating journey to Edakkal Cave, a prehistoric rock shelter located in Wayanad, Kerala. This natural cave is renowned for its ancient petroglyphs, believed to be over 6,000 years old, offering a glimpse into the lives and culture of early humans. The climb to the cave is an adventure in itself, winding through coffee plantations and offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Edakkal Cave holds immense historical significance as one of the earliest known centers of human habitation in the region. The petroglyphs within the cave depict various figures, symbols, and animals, providing valuable insights into the beliefs, rituals, and daily lives of the people who lived here during the Neolithic and Mesolithic periods. The cave was discovered by Fred Fawcett, the then Superintendent of Police of the Malabar district, in 1890. Visitors can explore the cave and marvel at the ancient petroglyphs. The climb to the cave involves a moderate trek, offering scenic views along the way. Photography is allowed, but flash photography is usually restricted to protect the petroglyphs. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly at the cave site, Sulthan Bathery, the nearest town, offers a variety of local Kerala cuisine, including traditional dishes like Malabar biryani and various vegetarian options.
Transportation
The nearest airport is Calicut International Airport (CCJ), approximately 95 km away. From the airport or nearby cities like Kozhikode (Calicut), you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Sulthan Bathery. From Sulthan Bathery, you can hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach Edakkal Cave. Buses are available from Kalpetta to Sulthan Bathery. From Sulthan Bathery, you will need to take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to the cave entrance, followed by a short trek to the cave itself.
