Home of Freedom: Witnessing India's Independence Movement Guide

Swaraj Bhavan, meaning "Abode of Freedom," is a historic house museum in Prayagraj, India, that played a pivotal role in India's struggle for independence. Once the ancestral home of the Nehru-Gandhi family, it was donated to the Indian National Congress in 1930 and served as its headquarters for a time. Today, it stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices and dedication of India's freedom fighters. Originally known as Anand Bhavan, the house was built by Motilal Nehru in the early 20th century. It became a hub for political activity, hosting meetings and discussions that shaped the course of the Indian independence movement. In 1930, Motilal Nehru donated the house to the Indian National Congress, renaming it Swaraj Bhavan. The Nehru family then moved to a new residence, also named Anand Bhavan, which is located nearby and is also open to the public. Swaraj Bhavan witnessed numerous historical events, including visits from Mahatma Gandhi and other prominent leaders. Visitors to Swaraj Bhavan can explore the various rooms and exhibits that showcase the life and times of the Nehru-Gandhi family and their contributions to the freedom struggle. The museum houses a collection of photographs, documents, and artifacts that provide insights into the political and social climate of the era. You can also see the room where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits. While Swaraj Bhavan itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, Prayagraj offers a variety of North Indian dishes, including local sweets and snacks, that you can enjoy nearby.
