Prabal Fort: A Ruined Fortress with Panoramic Views Guide
Perched atop a plateau near Matheran, Prabal Fort, also known as Kalavantin Durg, offers a thrilling trek and stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. While largely in ruins, the fort's strategic location and the challenging climb make it a popular destination for adventure enthusiasts and history buffs. Prepare for an unforgettable experience as you explore the remnants of this ancient fortress. Prabal Fort has a rich history, dating back to the 13th century. It was initially under the control of the Bahmani Sultanate and later captured by Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century. The fort played a significant role in the Maratha Empire's defense strategy. Over time, it fell into disrepair, and today, only ruins remain, including remnants of walls, gateways, and water tanks. The main activity at Prabal Fort is trekking. The trek to the fort is considered moderately difficult, involving steep climbs and rocky terrain. The most challenging part is the final ascent, which requires navigating a narrow, rock-cut staircase. However, the breathtaking views from the top are well worth the effort. There are no food stalls or restaurants at the fort itself, so it's essential to carry your own water and snacks. You can find local food options in Matheran after your trek.
