Porcupine Point (Sunset Point) Guide
Porcupine Point: Witness Nature's Canvas at Sunset Guide
Porcupine Point, also known as Sunset Point, is arguably the most popular spot in Matheran for witnessing a spectacular sunset. The point gets its name from its unique shape, resembling a porcupine. It offers a wide, unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape, making it the ideal location to watch the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. Like Monkey Point, Porcupine Point's history is intertwined with the development of Matheran as a hill station during the British Raj. It quickly became a favorite spot for British officers and their families to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the region. The point's strategic location provides panoramic views, making it a valuable vantage point for appreciating the vastness of the surrounding hills and valleys. The primary activity at Porcupine Point is, of course, watching the sunset. Arrive early to secure a good spot and soak in the atmosphere. The views are equally stunning during the day, offering a clear perspective of the Prabalgad Fort in the distance. Photography enthusiasts will find ample opportunities to capture breathtaking landscapes. Similar to Monkey Point, you can find local vendors selling snacks and tea near the point.
Transportation
Matheran is a vehicle-free hill station. The closest you can get by car or taxi is Dasturi Naka. From there, you can either walk (approximately 30-45 minutes to Porcupine Point), hire a horse, or take a hand-pulled rickshaw. The toy train from Neral to Matheran is another scenic option, but it might not be running consistently. Check the schedule before planning your trip.
