Monte Hill Guide
Monte Hill: A Panoramic Vista of Margao's History Guide
Monte Hill, also known as Monte de Mae Deus (Mount of Mother of God), offers breathtaking panoramic views of Margao, Goa's bustling commercial capital. This elevated vantage point provides a serene escape from the city's vibrant energy, allowing visitors to soak in the beauty of the surrounding landscape, including the city's rooftops, lush greenery, and the distant Arabian Sea. It's a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone seeking a moment of tranquility. Monte Hill's historical significance is deeply intertwined with the Portuguese colonial era. The hill was once the site of the Mae de Deus Church, a grand structure built in 1565 by the Jesuits. Sadly, the original church was destroyed in 1583 during a raid. A new chapel was constructed later, but it too fell into disrepair. Today, only remnants of the old structures remain, adding an air of mystery and historical intrigue to the site. The hill serves as a poignant reminder of Goa's rich and complex past. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll up the winding path to the hilltop, taking in the scenic views along the way. The summit offers ample space for relaxation and contemplation. Photography is a must, capturing the stunning vistas of Margao and the surrounding countryside. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with Monte Hill itself, Margao offers a wide array of Goan cuisine. Be sure to explore the local restaurants and sample Goan specialties like vindaloo, xacuti, and bebinca.
