Tso Moriri Lake Guide

Tso Moriri: A Serene High-Altitude Sanctuary in the Himalayas Guide

Tso Moriri, also known as Lake Moriri, is a breathtaking high-altitude lake located in the Changthang region of Ladakh, India. This pristine lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and vast grasslands, offers a tranquil escape from the crowds and a chance to connect with nature. Tso Moriri is a designated Ramsar site, recognizing its importance as a wetland of international significance, particularly for its birdlife. Tso Moriri has been a part of the nomadic Changpa community's life for centuries. These pastoral nomads rely on the lake's surrounding grasslands for grazing their livestock, primarily yaks and sheep. The lake holds cultural and spiritual significance for the Changpa people, who consider it sacred. The Korzok Monastery, located near the lake, is a testament to the region's rich Buddhist heritage. Visitors to Tso Moriri can enjoy a variety of activities. Birdwatching is a major draw, with numerous migratory birds flocking to the lake during the summer months. Hiking around the lake offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Camping near the lake is a popular option, allowing visitors to experience the serenity of the high-altitude environment. It's important to note that the area is ecologically sensitive, and visitors are encouraged to practice responsible tourism. While dining options are limited, basic food stalls offer simple meals. In the nearby village of Korzok, you can find traditional Ladakhi cuisine, similar to what's available near Pangong Tso.

Transportation

Reaching Tso Moriri requires a road journey from Leh. Shared taxis and private vehicles are the most common modes of transport. The journey takes approximately 7-8 hours, and it's essential to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit the lake. The route typically involves crossing the Tanglang La pass, another high-altitude pass. Buses also operate on this route, but they are less frequent and may require advance booking. The road conditions can be challenging in some sections, so it's advisable to travel in a vehicle with good ground clearance.
