This temple holds immense significance as it is believed to be the place where Lord Murugan, as a young boy, imparted wisdom to his father, Lord Shiva. Legend says that Lord Brahma, the creator, failed to answer a question posed by Lord Murugan about the meaning of the Pranava Mantra "Om." As punishment, Murugan imprisoned Brahma. Lord Shiva intervened, and Murugan then taught Shiva the meaning of "Om," thus becoming his guru. The temple's architecture reflects this story, with the main deity, Swaminatha Swamy (Lord Murugan as the guru), enshrined atop a 60-step staircase representing the 60 Tamil years. The temple is believed to have been built by Parantaka Chola I in the 10th century CE. Visitors can climb the 60 steps to reach the main shrine of Swaminatha Swamy and offer prayers.
